Since 1995 every year the 63 year old Motorcycle Club has been putting on AMA District 23 - Flat Track Races. The double headers have been a highlight of the Minnesota Racing season at the lush club grounds near New Ulm, Minnesota.
Day one (June 5th) of the two event weekend was halted during practice on the wicked fast short track from a long lasting rain that started and went until late afternoon. Head of Track Prep, Smiley Wiltscheck had to call the event for Saturday. The Flying Dutchman Motorcycle Club - New Ulm Minnesota tried to reschedule the Short Track for Sunday but the AMA District 23 has a rule about having two races on the same day.
Early race favorite National Number 68, Josh Koch on the Jeff's S.O.S. Honda with video helmet camera on board swept the days Pro Class events... sort of. During the last of the days 22 classes, Rick Waschek District referee said Josh used the grass to pass 11K Kevin Anderson and then Kevin not liking the move cut through the infield to return the favor that then moved third place Tousley Motorsports /No Fear/ TBI Racing's 44 Dan Jacobson Jr. into the top spot. For some reason scoring didn't get the memo from Waschek. I'm just thinking, we may hear about creative track usage at the next event.
One thing about the wicked fast FDMC track is it has it damaging crashes every year it seems. Cole Anderson, the 14 year old Amateur Champion and winner of the 2010 - Daytona Short track and Springfield TT tagged a rear wheel on the first lap on the slick turn three infield section of the TT, high sided and fractured his wrist. Later Pro Singles 12L - Nick Mataya tank slapped himself over the bars just after the jump, his condition is fractured back. Nick Mataya and Kevin Anderson the days only pressure on Josh Koch who was at the first FDMC event 15 years ago on a PW-50.
I asked 22-year old Josh Koch, What his favorite memory is from the 15 years of FDMC events, He said, "Racing mini bikes with Brock Schwarzenbacher".
Open amateur class head the fans on there feet when #23-Dustin Paul on a 2-stroke 125 KTM held on for the hard fought win over heat winner and cause of the main events restart Zack Zemanovic... From the back line was second on lap one in hot pursuit of Paul. California's Lindsey King closed out the top three at the finish. Other second generation names Cale Langland, Kurt Funk, Geoff Thistle, and Riley Rasmusson made the "up and comers" look good.
Verdeen Langland and Randy Thistle battled in the 30+ event with Kurt Funk, Bob Becker, and Jeremy Khanne following.
AMA District 23 has opened there gates to the 50cc mini classes with free entry's! This concept has been working very good, with 25 mini bikers on hand. Dads and sons say this flat track racing is more fun the motocrossing.
New Ulm's Access Channel's, Jeff Hietala had a full day of filming the event for later programing and a $2-DVD (
