The Dust Wiper is a seal's best friend. They are the marines of the fork leg. They are the first ones to blast through all the dirt and mud keeping the seal safe and sound. The Dust Wiper is what is visible from the outside of the fork leg and a lot of people think they are in fact the fork seals. They can create a lot of sticktion if you don’t maintain them.
Needless to say the wiper gets abused. After it takes on all the mud and dirt it will usually get blasted with 100psi of hot soapy water.
The best thing you can do after you wash your bike is spray it down with WD40 or equivalent. I also recommend removing the wiper every so often, clean it really well and put some really light grease behind it before you install it back in the fork.
Otherwise your wiper feels like your bare butt trying to slide across the gym floor. No that’s what I call stiction!
